Dominica hosted two One Day International Cricket matches between the West Indies and South Africa on May 28th and 30th, 2010 . And while the outcome was disappointing to fans of the West Indies, the shining stars of the event were Dominica, her stadium, and the very supportive crowd.
3rd ODI: West Indies v South Africa
South Africa won by 67 runs
South Africa 224 (47.2 ov); West Indies 157 (38 ov)
4th ODI: West Indies v South Africa
South Africa won by 7 wickets (with 0 balls remaining)
West Indies 303/6 (50 ov); South Africa 304/3 (50 ov)
This event gave Dominica a chance to showcase her beauty to both regional and international communities. Most were impressed with Dominica’s lush green atmosphere, just hinted at by the beautiful views from the stadium.
The stadium itself did us proud. The cricket grounds were said to be superbly kept, one commentator calling the stadium “the best in the Caribbean.” Scoring more than 600 runs during the final match is a testament to the quality of the pitch.
The enthusiasm and support from Dominica’s fans were second to none. The cheers of the crowd were heard throughout the city of Roseau, rising up to the Morne. The elusive victory of Sunday’s match was heartbreaking, but we can only hope that more matches in such a positive environment can spur the West Indies on to future success!
