| A Carib Indian | "Ma Pampo" - 127 years old |
The Sharplis family, under the leadership of Philomen Sharplis, are among the pioneers of the export business. For 35 - 40 years now they have been exporting locally grown agricultural produce like yams, tannia, cush-cush, dasheen, plantain, citrus, toloma, spices, nutmeg, and also non-perishables like local bags, hats, baskets. All these are exported from Dominica to the French and other Caribbean islands. This tradition is still continued but on a limited basis. Philo, as she is affectionately called travels to Martinique on a weekly basis and sells to retailers on the market. She has a very welcoming personality and also knows how to treat customers. She is the co-owner of Sea World and runs the souvenir and merchandise store.
