The Sea Turtles of Dominica

Dominica is the nesting place for the giant leatherback and other turtles.

From Late March to October, a select few of visitors to Domincia's beaches are lucky to witness a remarkable event, as giant 1,000+lbs endangered Leatherback sea turtles arrive on the pristine beaches of south east Dominica to lay their precious cargo of eggs. Driven by ancient impulses, these remarkable creatures return to the Nature Isle (the home of their birth 25 to 30 years previously) to recreate the miracle of their fragile lives.

Each evening, RoSTI beach patrollers – who play an integral role in the protection of these animals and has been granted special access to the beach – escorts visitors who walk under the stars and see in the distance a giant leatherback sea turtle getting closer and closer, and if your lucky witness among dozens of tiny hatchlings scurrying for the safety of the Atlantic Ocean.
