Michel Henderson

"From the diminutive figure, standing 5 feet 2 inches and weighing 100 lbs comes a voice so strong yet gentle, sultry yet powerful, and with such command as to evoke emotion" …………….Da Vibe Vol 1.3

Michele Henderson is arguably one of Dominica's premier female vocal talents. No stranger to the Dominican entertainment scene, Michele's status is growing by leaps and bounds throughout the Caribbean and further a field with every performance.

Michele Henderson

Michele's first recollections of singing in a public venue are in church from the tender age of two. She lists her late father, Lambert Henderson among one of her biggest influences, and though he's gone now, continues to influence her music and inspire her through the fond memories that they shared.

Though Michele had been singing around Grand Bay, the village she calls home, she really burst into prominence in Dominica and caught the eye of the nation with her participation in the 1995 DOMFESTA song contest. She won this event with an original composition entitled "My Pride".

In December 1995, she joined the band Impact, made up of a group of talented local musicians, and in November 1996, they released their first and only project entitled "Islander," with three songs accredited to Michele. Michele fought through the adversity of losing her father in June of 1996 to complete that project.

Michele received the Fame award in Dominica for the best recorded female artist for 1997 and received the Emergens award in Martinique for being a successful young and upcoming Caribbean Artist.

Since then, Michele has performed on numerous recordings in Dominica. Practically every Carnival season you can hear her voice singing backups on most of the recorded Calypso tunes, and she's a main staple in the Imperial All Stars, the group that has produced the three "Mizik a Nou" compilations released for Dominica's World Creole Music Festival to date.

While 5 months pregnant, Michele competed at the CBU song contest in Barbados and on Jan 27th 1998, gave birth to a baby girl. On Nov, 28th of that year she was married to the love and rock of her life Roland Delsol Jr. In 2000, Michele, was part of the Dominican contingent at Carifesta 2000 in St. Kitts, so the region was exposed to this budding Dominican talent.

Michele is still coming of age. However, it only takes one performance to convince the audience that great things are in store for Michele. She's just made one giant step with the release of her self-entitled debut album "Michele Henderson" in October 2000. One listen will tell you that she is destined for great things.

While Michele lists her father as her greatest inspiration for songwriting, there are several influences in her life as far as singing and performing including modern performers like Lauryn Hill. Hailing from the cultural Capital of Dominica, Michele's style is unique; her interpretation and delivery have underlying tones from Dominica's traditional Creole influences. Couple that with her love for singing, and her penchant to pick the best music to most appropriately tell the story, and you can see where the imagination, risk, and variety comes from.
