I went to Dominica with a group from my church back in '92. While all the others wanted to spend a day off at the beach, the youth pastor and I had heard about this wondrous location. We found a guide and started off. Well, it turns out the 'guide' had only been there once himself but we got there nonetheless.

It was breathtaking ... and I don't mean just because of the sulphur! It still stands out as one of the most incredible natural sights I have ever seen.

I would recommend this (and the 'mountain chicken'!) to anyone.

It was the hardest hike of my life, but it was well worth it. The lake is amazing! I can't imagine what it must have been like for early inhabitants to come across such a thing. It's been 3 days since I hiked it, and I'm STILL sore!

The boiling lake was amazing (and stinky) and so was the Valley of Desolation! The hike was invigorating, and Titou Gorge was a welcome site. The group I was with was lucky to have a cloudy day and no rain, especially since someone that hiked it earlier in the week said that she got more water up her nose and in her mouth from the downpours than from scuba diving. I recommend hiking to Boiling Lake to all visitors of Dominica.

Fantastic hike with my wife and two best friends! Lots of rain turns easily passable streams into rushing rivers. Rainforest was absolutely amazing as was the Valley of Desolation. The Lake was very misty and only a good wind would clear the air which enabled us to see the massive boil in the center.

This day hike took us into parts of Dominica that many people do not have the opportunity to see. I think I speak for the whole group in saying that we would definitely like to make this hike again!

Great but hard walk done by myself and several members of my ships company (HMS Northumberland). Scenery and lake fantastic until it rained then poured then came down in buckets, our guide became very concerned and hurried us along on the way back. The tracks that were there on the way to the lakes were now streams and we were ankle deep in water. Then it rained even harder, coming in horizontal with the wind on the peaks and ridges. On the last part of the trail we were virtually running, when we reached the river we realised why our guide was so anxious to get back quickly, the nice shallow benign river we had so easily crossed at the start of the hike had turned into a torrent caused by flash flooding. We were now tired, very wet and getting colder by the minute. Our guide said we could wait until the rain stopped and the river subsided, or we could chop a tree down and try to use it to cross. We elected to try the latter. Chopping hard wood trees with a machete is not easy, but by taking in turns and with aid from other people coming back down the trail we felled a tree, trimmed it, dragged it to the river and dropped it across, and with a slight lessening of the flood, linked ourselves using rucksacks, and using the tree to brace against we crossed the river. What an experience! Tips... Wear rugged footwear (not deckshoes), take a lightweight waterproof jacket, a few emergency rations and a chainsaw...

Comments: I'm planing the trip now, I will never forget the lake, hike, falls and people of Dominica, all wonderful. It was hard, breath taking and spiritual, I knew how wonderful nature really was after the island trip. The best part was I felt more like a local than a tourist, I was greated on every turn by warm and caring people, that loved to chat and laugh. I travel to the Islands often (have my own plane) but my heart is, and always will be in Dominica. This is by far the jewel of the Islands. Ted

Comments: If you were gong to design the perfect hike, this would be it. Nice 50 min. warm up and cool down at the begining and end. Fabulous mountain top views. Amazing geological formations, Hot springs to relax in before you start your return and a cool refreshing swim at the end, cold beer too. Challenging enough to make you feel you accomplished something but not so much that you over do it. My 50 something husband and I and our two teenage sons made it in about 8 hours.

Comments: The most breathtaking and spectacular hike I've ever done. The fierce and rugged beauty of the terrain and rainforest was otherwordly. Despite what we heard one does not need to be a seasoned hiker to make this trek. You do need to be reasonably fit, however, but almost as important is to be mentally tough and determined to finish the hike. Very satisfying and rewarding. Our thnks to Ryley Rolle, our guide, who provided moral support when we needed it!

Comments: This hike was amazing, you went through so many different climates, and terrains. From rainforest, to mountain top, to volcanic wasteland (valley of desolation), to the lake itself (where we had eggsalad sandwiches for lunch, oops). From rain to sun to shady humid forest. My sandal broke on the way back at the top of sharks tooth mountain (that really muddy hill...you know..) so I had to walk out like the locals, with a bare foot. All those who wouldn't do it again must have forgetten having a Kubuli at the end, and jumping in Titou Gorge for a swim. The hike was long, and at times muddy, but totally worth it.

Comments: Wow, what a trip! o^-_^o I have to say the Boiling Lake and the Valley of Desolation are two of the most amazing things I've ever seen. The hike through the jungle was amazing - I've never been anywhere like it before. I was JUST able enough to do the whole thing. Too bad I got sick to my stomach when we reached the lake - it DOES smell pretty bad. Anyways, it was wonderful and I'd LOVE to go back! And thanks to our guide Kelvin, you're great! o^-_^o

Comments: One of the truly great 'discovery' experiences. I was aged 48,filming 'The Orchid House' for Channel 4- had dengue fever at the beginning of the shoot, but felt strong enough 4 weeks later to tackle The Lake. A 5am start from Laudat with a brilliant guide plus machete - all fine till top of the Mt Nicholls ridge where I saw coloured rags tied to a tree "that's where a German girl fell to her death" - the wind was now strong but luckily it was misty and as my guide urged me to run fast across a narrow section when the wind dropped I was unaware of the precipice either side. On the steep drop down to the Valley of Desolation I had severe vertigo, panicked, but the guide was brilliant and 'talked' me down. I remember the Lake so vividly - I've lost my photos but they are still in my head- we ate fried egg sandwiches above the Lake in the rain, which was now heavy. The return trip seemed to go quickly. I dreaded the dash across the ridge, but it was OK. I was back at The Anchorage Hotel by 2pm -next day my calf muscles were like rock. I could hardly walk ! Unforgettable.

Comments: The only reason that this hike is not on every hikers life list is that they don't know about it. The whole hike is absolutely amazing. The climbs are steep and rugged, but the views are incredable. Then you enter the Valley or Desolation; unique. Finally the lake itself. After a good hard workout a quick dip in Titou Gorge or if youe lucky someone will show you the hot springs below the gorge

Comments: This hike was very difficult for me in several sections, even though I had done a similar hike in duration and length in Texas. The trail was very muddy mainly because all of the rain drains through the trail. By far the hardest part was leaving the Valley of Desolation on the return trip. This is because the trail is very steep, you must lift your legs up a good distance, and the mud can make it difficult for you to lift your legs up in the first place. However, a large portion of the hike goes through relatively flat ground (although muddy) with only a gentle incline.

Our guide Alan Daraux, from Laudat, was a star and carried the biggest pineapple we'd ever seen all the way to the top for our refeshment and gave us the will to carry on. Comments: I'm 41 years old and was 10 days away from running my first marathon, so I figured I was in shape enough to do the hike--yikes!! This hike is definately tough, lots of up and down the sides of mountains, temperature and weather changes, mud and tree roots and hot springs, you name it, they had it, except for a water fountain! My 15 year old son had no problem whatsoever! I was happy that we had read the info on the website before going, otherwise my camera would have been ruined, as it rained the whole time we were in the rainforest (go figure)! It would be advisable to also bring along some tissues in a plastic bag, as the condensation from all the humidity and temp changes was terrible on the camera lens. All in all it was an incredible journey. One of the things that makes it so memorable was that it WAS so difficult. At one point when we were manuvering down an extremely muddy mountain side and Ryan slipped and kick me in the but, nearly knocking me down, I began to laugh at the absurdity of the whole thing--the fact that we had voluntarily set out and we were paying good money to be punished for the good part of a day. But seriously, it was an incredible experience and I am thankful that I was able to share it with my son.

Comments: It was grueling and very wet and extremely muddy (the weather was laughing at our Gore-tex). We had lots of wind and rain and passed many people on the trail who were turning back. We kept asking our guide, Aaron Rolle from Laudat, if we should also turn back and he very confidently assured us that in his capable hands, he would deliver us safely to the Lake and back. On the way back, the only thing that enabled me(Stan) to muster up enough willpower to make it was the constant thought of a hot bath in the hotel room (which I might add was the most enjoyable bath of my entire life). The Valley of Desolation was other-wordly and almost worth the effort. If we did it again, we might think about training a little more and would certainly prefer a dry, sunny day if possible. Aaron Rolle was great and kept us optimistic practically the whole time.

Believe me, I am not kidding!! The trek to the boiling lake is the most awesome and dumbfounding experience you will ever encounter. You can do nothing but stare and marvel at all the nature that Dominica has to express. Dominica is a true jewel and gift to the Carribbean, and it certainly earns its name as the nature island of the caribbean!! But really I don't think my body will ever recover from the exertion of the hike. I would not be able to endure another crusade of that sort, but it was certainly worth the effort, a thousand times even!!!

Always at the end I started nearly running down to get my refreshment in the Titou Gorge. And how the place has changed. In 1994 there was still nothing. Now we have like a bar and fascilities. Amazing, but sometimes I wonder if every natural site has to be turned into a spot of entertainment. Hopefully the cable car project will not be succesful to avoid that this wonderful part of the island region will be spoiled and overcrowded.

Comments: It was a lot of fun at the beginning, but it got harder and harder. I could not walk without pain for a whole week! Also, I'm very short, and those wooden steps built in the last few years were sometimes too steep for me to climb! After a while, I kept missing the step and dipping my foot into the mud below! Needless to say, I had to throw away that pair of socks and dye my jeans before I could wear them again in public! It was all worth it in the end, because I went with a friend who was a first-time visitor to the island (I was born in Dominica but left at age 4). Although she had spent much of her childhood in Indonesia hiking in its impressive rainforest, verdant Dominica left her in awe. She ended up throwing away the sneakers that made it to the Boiling Lake.

Comments: I remember as a young adventurous lad growing up in Roseau, the Rolle and Toulon boys from Roseau and myself used to go on weekend trips to different (very difficult) locations throughout the Island. I remember my first trip in 1974 to the Boiling lake, eating fresh water crest along the route. back then it was an adventure and a way of life, these excursions. My return trip in 1999 was a lot more difficult as I have aged an not as eager an explorer as I once was. I must say that the beauty I once new in 74 was relived in 1999 and I was amazed at how little the experience had changed.

Comments: Absolutely, anytime again! It was an unforgettable experience. Hardly anywhere in the world can you experience such natural wonders as on that hiking route to Boiling Lake (and many are the places I have seen...). Those days we were two young scandinavian students from Finland who hiked all the way up to the lake together with two french botanists who just happened by occasion to be on the same path. These two very nice botanists really knew a lot about the vegetation, and I´m sure we saw quite much more than on an ordinary trip through the forest (something for the tourist guides to think about?). The numerous vegetation zones and unbelievable flowers that stay hidden behind the branches, that only well trained eyes could present for novices like us, were just breathtaking. All the different types of rain forest and unbelievable flowers on the lavafield near the boiling area - it all made our trip just unforgettable. (I only lost the friendly botanist´s addresses (and names!). It would be very nice to hear Your experienes too if you happen to read this!) and then, an: IMPORTANT NOTICE TO THE GOVERNMENT OF DOMINICA! You have one of the "Seven Wonders" of the nature right there in your country. It´s one of the most beautiful places on planet earth and as a man from one of the most naturally preserved parts of Europe I am very concerned about the story of building a CABLE CAR to the site. What a shame if it becomes just another touristic attraction with souvenir shops and ticket sales and all the negative effects on nature that too much commerce is unevidently bringing. Now it still is a truly unique place to visit. Make it a natural reserve and let people enjoy the unspoiled wonders of Dominica, as always before, and make it possible even for the future generations!

Yet, different temperate zones, different colors, different temperatures, and vastly chaning altitudes make this one of the most enjoyable and worthwhile hikes I have ever made -- and I have hike all over the world! I need to return to Dominica several more times in my lifetime and I will keep going back as long as during each trip I can make the hike! There are a lot of other great things to see and do in Dominica, but this is a must. The others are wonderful and round out a wonder smorgasbord.

Comments: My first trips to the lake were just after David, when I was working as a VSO at t he teachers' collge and there wasn't much of a track. I went with two friends, Chris and Lynne, and we got lost in the valley. Made it on a second occasion guided by Sammie John-Baptiste of Laudat, accompaniied by Allan, Clare, Chris and Lynne. third time was with the Canadian OCOD team, most of whom had to abandon the attempt, but a small and happy team made it. It was good to go back in 97 and do it again. The track is much clearer now and theer is a bridge over the river were once you had to creep over pipes, but it's still a great adventuure and I'll always goi back for all the happy memories the hike holds. I think the cable car idea is not good.

Comments: When I found myself in Dominica for 8 wks with the United States Army I was in awe with the Mountains, rivers, watefalls and the beaches. The People of the Island are by far the best people I have ever encountered. As I began to become friends with the Natives I heard of this Boiling Lake! I could not even imagine the intesity of it. So I ventured out to find it on my fisrt day off in country. We rented a car and were off totally unsuccessfull. However it was not a total waste. As it was the prettiest secinary I had yet seen in my life. Still nothing could prepare me for the next day that I would have off and be afforded the oppurtunity of a native police officer as a guide! we crossed 5 mountain ranges and walked thru WALLS of rain that seemed to have a precise direction to them. Then there was the Valley of Deselation, with the sulfur stream that the natives bottle the water for cleaning their skin. As I climbed to the top of the crater that holds the Boiling lake I could barly see the lake for all the steam and fog that the preceeding rain had left behind. When it did finnaly clear I could not believe my eyes this myth was not a myth at all 3hrs of hiking to see the most amazing sight I had ever laid my eyes on! It seemed to be a perfect cicle and about a acre or more big just boiling like a big kettel. I snapped picture after picture of this sight for fear that I might never make it there again. But I assure you that I WILL and I cant wait. If you ever have the oppurtunity to take this venture it will be a challenging one for some and a breeze for others but I promisse you it will be worth every minute of your time.

Whit one of the person we went, at the valley of desoletion she stayed, because she was scared to go down, she went back whit her husband. Finaly, I was ghething there, but I was VERY HUNGRY! (you know what I mean 4 hours) So a friend give me a bottle of juice. But finnaly, ALL OF US GOT THERE! Right there I could TAKE A BREATE THAKING! I Was so HAPPY I GOT THERE. Comments: Welcome to Boiling Lake! Not in the best physical shape? Don't worry! If we made it to the lake, so can you. (Just remember that once you are there - you still have to make it back down.) It took us about 6 hours, and that's including the rest stops, mud slides, and cliffhangers. (I'm talking about getting stuck half way down the descend to the Valley of Desolation!) We recommend bringing some water and snacks- we were at the mercy of a Cadbury chocolate bar found at the bottom of a backpack. Wear comfortable shoes, although our guide seemed to be just fine wearing flip-flops. And remember to take a swim in Titou Gorge on your way back down; it will definitely take a load off those tired legs. So, take a hike! It's a great adventure through beautiful scenery to a natural wonder. I think we are definitely ready for the big times... that's right... SURVIVOR VI !

For those wondering about sneakers or hiking boots, I did the trail in trail running shoes and had no problem. The trail is quite rocky and at times I could feel the rocks through my soles. If you have room in your suitcase and you have a pair of well broken-in hiking boots, go with the hiking boots. Otherwise, use your sneakers, be careful and have a great hike. I'd highly recommend Francis Frampton. He charged us $40 US each for 3 of us. Probably not the cheapest guide but he comes highly recommended. Comments: It is definitely something that anyone who visits Dominica should experience. It's not about how fast you can do the hike. Enjoy the beauty of your surroundings. And having the best guide on the island, Francis Frampton from St.Joseph, certainly helped make it a "supernatural" journey.

Had we known before what it would be like, we certainly would have thought about it twice. Anyhow, it´s something to be experienced and everybody should try.

Comments: I used to live in Dominica, from 1992 - 1995. Along with several of my friends we made the journey to the Boiling Lake (approx. 3 hours)and then afterwards, enjoyed a cool swim in Tito-Gorge (not sure how to spell it, please forgive me). I love Dominica and will visit the Island again within the next year or two.

Comments: Wow! This trip was full of all the "us" except one...trecherous, strenuous but NOT monotonous!!! This was an incredible hike. As an American (we take everything with a grain of salt) we looked back in hind site and understood why they say "At your own risk"! Our guide (make sure you track down Clem) was the best. Our legs were sore but after it was over, we couldnt help but say how beautiful it was!!! Words of advice...bring water and food. Fresh fruit for the trip back would have been the best!!! Make sure you bring good walking (hiking boots seemed to be the UNpopular choice believe it or not!).

Comments: We stayed one week at Roxy`s mountain lodge. Exellent! Good and hard walking, just like home in Norway, but these hills and mountains are covered by warm humid rainforest, with lots and lots of flora and fauna! It gave us a memory we will never forget, and we will never forget the sounds from the forest! We (my girlfriend and I), are going back, with a friend summer 2001! We just love you Dominicans! I be back! Linda (Sweden)& Bjørn (Norway) If you are up for nature; go to Dominica.

Comments: Hello all, of course, it is a long time ago we went to the boiling lake. It was a grat experience and we were amazed to find this wb-site. We stayed at Roxy´s mountain lodge in Laudat at Rock and Valerie. It would be nice if anyone who plans to visit Dominica to send them our best wishes. We promised to return when we are married and have children. Now we are married and have two (Tim and Julia. Perhaps they remember us. We stayed there over christmas with Bob and Nancy from the states (he was story teller). Please tell Valerie that we miss her "christophines" and Bob´s "Pina colada". We hope to receive any news from there. Marion and Christoph Simsch from Germany

Comments: As our driver told us, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and we were not disappointed. We were blessed with good weather (very little rain and mild temperatures) and very low traffic (only saw five other hikers all day). For those of you with questions about fitness, I can tell you that this hike is not terribly difficult. My friend and I are in our late 20s, workout 2-4 times week, and had no experience with technical hiking whatsoever. We reached the lake in 2 hours and got back in closer to 2:30, since we stopped more frequently. Even if it were rainier, I think we still would have been able to handle it no problem. We were easily the youngest people on the trail that day, so don't be daunted. As for the study boots suggestion, I did it in 2 year old running shoes with only one blister to show for it. Our guide hikes it three times per week wearing flip flops, so leave the crampons at home. Speaking of our guide, David was excellent. Although he probably gouged us (US$60 for two of us), he was well spoken, knowledgeable, and talkative. He can be found in Laudat. I likely won't do it again, but not because it was so hard. Moreso because there are other more rewarding trips (Sari Sari and Middleham come to mind).

Comments: We went with about 30 people less than half our age. Many of them broke time records getting up and down. We hike quite a bit, have done Mt. Whitney, Half Dome in Yosemite, Machu Pichu etc. but this one was one of the most magical places in the world. And it is gruelling, especially in the rain. We will never forget it or the Rastafarian ceremony we saw being conducted in a hot spring fed pool. I would do it again in a heartbeat. What's more we are totally opposed to a tram or over developing the island. What makes this wonderous place so spectacular is the fact it has been left relatively untouched. Getting to Boiling Lake under one's own steam is part of the prize. Dominica hopefully will remain as it is, for people who really appreciate it.

Comments: Great trip. With Ashley (12) and Matthew (10), we weren't sure if it would be too strenuous for them. But they'd been primed about the time it would take, and how many times they'd have to go up, down, up, down, up, before reaching the Lake. We needn't have worried! We had to hold them back. The weather was kind - slightly overcast and only one light shower. What a trip! Fantastic scenery - please don't let it be spoilt by any mountain railways!

Comments: My mother took her seventh grade class to Dominica one summer... We toured the entire island and of course the Boiling Lake was on our list of things to do...It took so long for us to get to the lake, I didn't think we would ever reach. I was so hungry on the hike that my uncle who had two slices of cheese in his pocket, decided to share a slice with me. I never enjoyed cheese so much. When I finally made it to the boiling lake, I'd forgotten how tired I was... Oh what a wonderful experience.

Comments: THE DAY WE TREKKED TO THE BOILING LAKE STARTED OUT BEAUTIFUL AND SUNNY AND TURNED COLD, WINDY AND RAINY. WE FORDED SWOLLEN CREEKS, PLUNGED OUR FEET ANKLE DEEP IN MUD AND WAS SAVED BY OUR GUIDE, PASKEL. IF YOU THINK YOU ARE IN SHAPE TO MAKE THIS HIKE, YOU PROBABLY AREN'T, AND IF YOU THINK YOU CAN MAKE IT THERE AND BACK WITHOUT A GUIDE... YOU ARE VERY, VERY WRONG. THE LODGE WHERE WE STARTED THE TRIP WAS A WELCOME SITE AND THE GINGER TEA WAS WONDERFUL. THE VIEWS BEFORE THE RAIN WERE SPECTACULAR AND WE WOULD NOT TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING. I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO GO AGAIN, A LITTLE SLOWER THIS TIME AND WITHOUT THE RAIN AND WIND. WE HAVE TRAVELED TO MANY SITES IN THE CARRIBEAN AND DOMINICA IS OUR FAVORITE. VICTORIA AND CLINTON ALLEN

Comments: I wasn't sure what I was getting into after reading the entire guest book for the Boiling Lake, but I knew that I had to do it. My girlfriend and I did the Boiling Lake hike on our first full day in Dominica. We had a guide, Ashton, who was very experienced with the hike. He seemed to be in a bit of a hurry. We did the round trip in just under 6hrs including a 45min lunch break at the lake. Just to let you know what kind of shape Denise and I are in; we both work out 2 or 3 times a week and both enjoy biking, rollerblading, backpacking and other outdoor activies. It is a difficult hike and we both had sore calf muscles for the next couple days, but it is worth the effort and pain. We passed people of all ages along the trail. We didn't destroy any shoes as others had and I have no idea where the person was that lost a shoe, but I suppose it could happen if it had been raining for days. The comparison to a stairmaster is fitting except that hiking outdoors on a beautiful island is much more fun that working out in a gym. I recommend this hike to anyone who is in reasonably good shape. One suggestion: if your guide is going to fast and not talking about the vegitation & land tell him/her to slow down and talk to you. Afterall, you are paying them to be a tour guide and tours should be informative.

These two trips(once we had rain from morning till return, the second time we had a nice dry day) I will never forget as long as I live. As I read in the guestbook, I also remember the first "LOST AND FOUND" of these three girls! Thanks again to our guide from from Laudat, whose name I cannot remember right now. Comments: A little bit afraid we started our trip to the boiling lake. It wasn't easy, but it was surely wurth it. My wife and I are not at all used to do trips like that. Belgium is flat and you can't walk for 5 minutes without seeing a house. We loved the trip through the rain forest and we would certainly do it again. The only difficulty to get to the boiling lake is the trip to Dominica itself. We needed 36 hours to get from Belgium tot Dominica!
