The Pwi Pwi is a traditional raft used by fisherman to fish in the waters just offshore. It takes a lot of muscle, as well as skill, to scull these craft through the water in an accurate and efficient manner. The Pwi Pwi |

The Carib Canoe is a traditional fishing boat used in fishing villages throughout Dominica. On most days of the year, you can see fisherman in Soufriere and Scotts Head heading out to sea in their boats as the sun comes up. But not so this past Saturday. Once a year, the fisherman leave their gear packed away and on the last day of Dive Fest, they bring their boats to Soufriere to race against their fellow fisherman in the annual Carib Canoe Race. Joined by Corporate teams, local Dominicans and visiting tourists, the team members try to prove their superior strength and skill to emerge the winners of the Carib Canoe race. |

This is how it works. Each team includes four rowers and a boat captain. The captain remains in the boat for the entire race, while two rowers race out to the floating platform about 75 yards offshore. There, a transfer is made - - two rowers jump out while the two remaining rowers (who had been delivered to the platform prior to the race) jump into the boat for the last leg, racing back to shore. The result is an energetic, splashy race against time and competitors to reach the beach, victorious.
