Introduction
When a friend of mine insisted I videotape him as he played cricket around the island (well, he is quite good), I suddenly realised that one could see some of the most beautiful places on the island simply by visiting cricket pitches... So I'm never disappointed even when I arrive and my friend is out (only kidding, Jack!).
Walk to L'Escalier Tete Chien in the Carib Territory and you'll pass across this pitch.
Certainly the flattest in Dominica, the Castle Bruce pitch not only has a wonderful backdrop in Morne Trois Pitons but is also on a beautiful sweeping bay. The cow is at very deep mid-wicket position.
On the south east coast, Petite Savanne's cricket pitch is perched on the edge of a cliff (is that where the term 'gully' comes from?). The rock at mid-on must also add to the interest of this ground.
Where the challenge of the game is heightened by a very slow wicket, and an awkward outfield. And yet a beach was the only time I ever caught and bowled.
