Crescent
Moon cabins is a unique and serene environment prepared by your
hosts Ron and Jean Viveralli. We are located in the foothills
of Morne Trois Pitons National Park, midway between the Melville
Hall airport and the capitol city Roseau. We are fortunate to
have challenging hiking, hidden waterfalls, and explorable ruins
all within our valley. We can also make the necessary arrangements
for knowledgeable and friendly guides to accommodate your special
interests. Dominica's waterfalls, snorkelling coves, and hiking
trails are all easily accessible from Crescent Moon Cabins. While
staying with us at Riviere La Croix you will be invited to watch
or participate in some of our savoured chores such as making cocoa,
roasting coffee, and squeezing fresh picked fruits for juices.
No matter how you choose to spend your time in Dominica, we know
that you will take home with you health and happiness.

The
cabins are designed to take full advantage of the panoramic
views of the mountains and sea. Building construction incorporates
local wood which seamlessly blends into the forest. The grounds
are lush with tropical flower and fruit plants. Mango, Pawpaw,
Almond trees as well as Banana and Breadfruit add a charming
touch to this romantic setting. Stone foot paths take you into
the forest or down by the river where you can take a cool bath,
observe the many species of birds that come to visit, or just
relax and read a book.
A
locally handcrafted bed enlivens the cabin. Sights of the sea
can be had from this vantage point or from the ten foot verandah.
Each cabin has a spacious private bathroom and shower.

Make
yourself at home in the open-air dining room. Relax in the artisan
décor of Dominican wood furnishings. Here is where the
day begins over slow roasted coffee, just -picked juice of the
day, full breakfast, and bird watching.

The
evening brings a backdrop of chirping frogs and crickets as
you savor what our guests have heralded as the best
food in the universe!
At Crescent Moon, we believe in taking time to prepare a meal.
We enjoy celebrating, through creative cuisine, the coming
of what is in season. Ron is forever integrating his mastery
of international cuisine with the exotic produce and savory
seasonings of the region. Dinner always begins with hot, home
baked bread. A sample menu would start with a mixed green
salad with beets and papaya dressing. An entrée of
African style peanut stew with sweet potato, ladies yam, garden
ochra, and wild ginger served with a portion of lemongrass
rice to follow. And as for dessert, a hint would be to take
stock of what fruits are piling up. Our favorite is homemade
mango ice cream!

The
on-site greenhouse and gardens cater to fresh and fine cuisine.
It is important to us to cultivate wholesome foods from the
inherently rich soil of Dominica, thus minimizing the time between
plants and plate.

Our lounge is more like a living room with a complete library.
In addition to an eclectic mix of fiction, we have an expanded
resource corner of Dominican information and literature. You will
find books on birding, sea life, flora, and natural healing..
There are also studies of Dominican history, music, architecture,
and cuisine as well as local works of fiction and poetry. Feel
free to roll out the big map, consult the guidebooks, and chart
a course for the day. There is an assortment of instruments if
you are inclined and all of the favorite games are there. High-speed
wireless internet connection is available. |

Feel
free to wander about. Garden paths meander throughout the
property with self-guiding labels of ornamental flowers, fruit
trees, culinary herbs, and medicinal plants.
Have a look in the greenhouse to see what is growing. From
there you can pass through the passion fruit orchard and visit
our lady chickens and goats. They love the attention and are
sure to put on a show. For the bold there is still more as
a steep forest track winds its way to a viewpoint of the majestic
Morne Trois Piton.

| Crescent
Moon Cabins is an eco-sensitive establishment in that we effectively
"recycled" the ruins of an original hotel, building
on existing foundations, using local hand-harvested materials
within previously landscaped areas. We are fortunate to be situated
on Rivier La Croix that provides all of our utility water via
a ram pump. Our drinking water comes from a natural mountain spring.
Our community is very involved in Crescent Moon by offering trail
guiding, educational farm tours, supplying additional produce,
and providing transportation. We have been very fortunate to have
both visitors and neighbors with ecologically conscious lifestyles.
It is a pleasure for us to facilitate this exchange. |

Both
of us, your hosts Ron and Jean, are originally from Erie,
PA. We spent 37 years there, where we raised two beautiful
daughters, Tiana and Juliana, with the help and support of
our families. After finishing a master's degree in Early Childhood/
Elementary Education with a focus on Montessori Education,
Ron and I moved to Maine and then to Charleston, South Carolina.
Ron is a professional Chef trained through the Culinary Institute
of America with 20 years of experience with fine dining restaurants
specializing in International cuisine. Then came the opportunity
to teach at a school on the 'Nature Isle' of Dominica. What
we discovered when we arrived was the unique pristine almost
untouched land of enchantment. The people were welcoming and
friendly. We fell in love with the natural beauty and splendour
of Dominica. When the teaching contract came to a close, we
knew we had to find a way of staying on the Island. We lived
in a small village called Galion, where we learned about herb
teas, Cimenkontwa, Basilica, Citronelle and many more. The
villagers taught Ron the art of roasting coffee, (good strong
coffee his passion), as well as, the process of making cocoa
from harvesting the pods to sun drying, roasting and grinding
the final product. He learned how to make charcoal from the
local wood. We both had quite a bit to learn about the tropical
fruits and the local vegetables or provisions dasheen and
tania. We were surprised to learn how much the villagers relied
on the phases of the moon to know when the best time was to
plant and harvest. It is one of the reasons we choose to name
our place Crescent Moon.
After searching the island, we came across an old resort that
had been the island's most remote hotel and very popular back
in the 60's. It has all the right ingredients for us. It is
situated at 1,800 feet high in the rainforest with temperatures
that are cool in the evenings all year round. It has a view
of the sea and Riviere La Croix running along side. It is
located in the Sylvania Forest and reminds us of the Allegany
Mountains that we had camped and hiked so much in Pennsylvania
and New York.
